If you’ve come by air, a 5 minute walk from the Marriott Mission Valley will take you to the trolley stop which will take you to Old Town San Diego. If you’ve come by car its a ten minute drive and there’s free parking there. You can spend a couple of hours seeing San Diego as it was and enjoy the old buildings, school house, hotel and a variety of shops and restaurants. This is also the location the San Diego Trolley Tours, a hop on and off bus that will take you around all the important stops. Enjoy the USS Midway, Star of India, Balboa Park with its beautiful gardens, numerous museums and the famous San Diego Zoo. Take the bus across the bridge to Coronado and the Hotel Del, the beautiful waterfront homes or stop off at Seaport Village for a little shopping or to watch the street entertainers while enjoying the bus driver’s history of our city and its naval connections.
If you have a car, head north to Carlsbad and The Craftsmanship Museum, a free museum dedicated to miniatures that appeal to all the family from dollhouses to working engines. Point Loma and the Cabrillo National Monument is just the other side of the airport. You may catch site of whales off shore from the viewing point and you’ll get a great view of the naval base and the ships in port. Maybe take one of the whale watching trips from the Embarcadero for a guaranteed whale sighting.
Bringing the kids? If you just want to soak up the sun and enjoy nature, our beaches are plentiful, there are numerous hiking trails in the area and the Botanical Gardens are only a few miles north in Encinitas. California missions offer a glimpse into the history of California. Legoland is just up the road in Carlsbad, also north is San Diego Zoo Safari Park where the animals roam free.
Of course, don’t forget the wineries and the many craft breweries. Visit Little Italy for dinner or stay close to Marriott and head to Mona Lisa on Waring Road. On the Border, Sammy’s are nearby…or head to El Indio on India St. – as seen on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. In fact, you can make a tour of Guy’s favorite places from breakfast to burgers!
Wander nearby Fashion Valley if you’d like to do some mall shopping, or if you’d like to pick up a few snacks stop at nearby Trader Joes.
